National Honor Society Information: Oostburg High School Chapter
Membership
Membership in local chapters is an honor bestowed upon a student. Selection for membership is by a Faculty Council and is based on outstanding Scholarship, Character, Leadership, and Service. At Oostburg High School, we believe selection to N.H.S. is the highest honor of recognition we have to offer. This honor recognizes the "whole person", not just the student component.
Purpose of National Honor Society
The purpose of this organization shall be to create enthusiasm for scholarship, to stimulate a desire to render service, to promote leadership, and to develop character in the students of secondary schools.
Chapter Officers
The officers of the chapter, their duties, and the method of their election shall be determined by the members of the chapter, approved by the Faculty Council and the Principal.
President: Reports directly to the adviser, who must confirm/approve plans; works with officers to plan meetings and notifies those who need to attend the meeting; lead officers meetings; delegates responsibilities for projects to officers and members; responsible for committees’ meeting, established deadlines; leads general meetings; serves as head spokesperson/role model for NHS.
Vice President: Reports to adviser, as requested by the President; takes over leadership for president in any role he/she cannot fulfill or in any role that is requested; attends all meetings and takes an active part in planning, assisting with delegation of responsibilities and implementing activities and programs; spokesperson/role model for NHS.
Secretary: Keeps accurate minutes of each planning meeting; provides a copy of the meeting minutes to the following people at agreed upon time: *Adviser, *President, *Vice President; Takes an active role in planning NHS activities; takes over the duties of the Vice President when requested.
Treasurer: Keeps account of all receipts, expenses and income; provides an up-to-date report of chapter finances at each meeting; Works with other officers to plan meetings; Takes an active part in planning and implementing NHS activates and programs; role model for NHS.
Service Obligations for National Honor Society Members
Each member shall have the responsibility for choosing and participating in a service project that reflects her or his particular talents or interests. This is in addition to the chapter projects to which all members contribute.
Prerequisite conditions for selection
Submit a completed National Honor Society application in to the Student Services by 3 o'clock on the deadline date. Selections will be announced after the selection committee as reached agreement. Membership is open to qualified sophomores, juniors, and seniors.
The Criteria
Scholarship
The minimum grade point allowable is a 3.0 on a 4.0 grade point scale. N.H.S. members are also students who contribute to the classroom environment through their active involvement in the learning process.
Leadership
The student who exercises leadership: exemplifies positive attitude, inspires positive behavior in others, demonstrates academic initiative, is a leader in the classroom, promotes school activities, is dependable, and is resourceful in proposing solutions to new problems, applying principles, and making suggestions.
Service
The student who serves: volunteers’ assistance, works well with others, does committee work, participates in some activity outside of school, mentors students, shows courtesy by assisting competition.
Character
The student of character takes criticism willingly and accepts recommendations graciously, exemplifies desirable qualities of behavior, upholds principles of morality and ethics, has self-discipline, manifests truthfulness and cooperates with school regulations concerning programs.
